In a letter to William Sutton, 1869 September 23, Butler regrets he cannot attend a meeting to the Essex Agricultural Society. In a letter to S. S. McClure, 1890 March 6, Butler regrets that he is too busy to write an article. In a letter to Frank G. Cook, 1890 June 9, Butler states that his publisher will have to decide on the unspecified matter about which Cook enquired.

Benjamin Franklin Butler was born in Deerfield, New Hampshire, the sixth and youngest child of John Butler and Charlotte Ellison Butler. His father served under General Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812 and later became a privateer, dying of yellow fever in the West Indies not long after Benjamin was born. William Sutton (1800-1882), the son of William and Elizabeth (Treadwell) Sutton, was born in Salem, Mass., on 26 July 1800. Sutton was a successful merchant in Salem, and from 1835 to 1880, president of the Salem Commercial Bank, later called the First National Bank of Salem. He was a trustee or director for a number of institutions and corporations, a member of the Massachusetts state legislature, and an officer in the Salem Cadets.
